We're back from high point MARKET AND HERE'S WHAT WE LOVED MOST

We’re back from High Point Market and one of the most surprising things we saw wasn’t furniture. Over and over again designers and industry insiders were coming up to us and saying how much they appreciate the conversations we have on the podcast because of how open and honest and REAL they are. So many of you who joined us for our Hot Spot Tour, at a happy hour, or a quick hallway chat outside a showroom told us how much it meant to you to have HYDC – and we just want to say THANK YOU.

At dinner one night another designer asked us what the best investment in our businesses has been. Some of the designers at the table talked about coaching, PR support, or a business program – but for Rebecca and I the best investment we’ve made is the time and energy to create such an amazing community of designers who can help and support each other grow. Being together in person at High Point Market we could see how so many of you have come together, sometimes from across the country, to build connections with each other and to support your businesses together. Having a friend to turn to who truly understands what you’re going through is such a valuable asset to being an entrepreneur.

So yes, we loved seeing the new lines and introductions during market. And we explored some amazing showrooms on our Hot Spot Tour like Gat Creek, Julian Chichester, and M Furnishings by Hooker. Be sure to check them out if you couldn’t join us at market because they have some great products and customization that we loved. And as exciting as all of this was, the best part has always been getting to know you all better!

So if you’re feeling like business is a little slow, or you’re feeling isolated, or you would just like someone to talk to who “gets it” we’d encourage you to foster a connection with other designers. If you can do this locally to you that’s awesome, or we’d love to see you in our monthly Hottie Hangouts on our Patreon. You’re going to find a vibrant and supportive group of design besties who are ready to help guide, support and empathize with you wherever you’re at.

Fizzles & Sizzles

Rebecca's Fizzle

Shaun's Fizzle

I’ve had such a fulfilling month, staying steady with projects I genuinely enjoy. But I’m starting to see that a slower season could be around the corner if I don’t get some new projects on the books soon. It’s a little reminder to keep an eye on filling the pipeline, even when things feel good.

One week before High Point, I was in the depths of tonsillitis, including chills, a fever, and a lost voice. Luckily, I got on antibiotics quickly and got myself back up to speed in time to travel safely for market, but it really derailed my work week leading up to it.

This month, I’ve been laser-focused getting everything in place for my time away at HPMKT immediately followed by an exciting trip to Oaxaca (!!). It feels amazing to head out knowing things should stay smooth and quiet while I’m gone. 🤞🏽

We got a puppy! Everyone meet Gypsy Rose (like the burlesque dancer). When I saw the picture of her on Petfinder, I started to fall in love right away, and she’s already been one of the sweetest additions to our family. Another great rescue story!

July Recap: You shouldn’t be the best in the room

The Best Part of Being a Designer Has Nothing to Do With Design For a profession that’s built on collaboration, we designers spend an awful lot of time trying to do everything ourselves. We learn to draw, we learn construction, we answer plumbing questions, solve electrical problems, manage schedules, source
