How did you end up in the design industry?
I stumbled into the design industry after designing my own home. I was anxious to share the results with the world, and through a series of events, it ended up featured in Midwest Living magazine. From there, a distant acquaintance reached out for help after seeing the feature—and the rest is history.
What does your team look like?
It’s me and my recently hired Operations Assistant.
Tell us about the project you're sharing.
Last year, I got a call from a prospective client asking for help turning her newly purchased house into a top-notch museum showcasing her inherited heirlooms and collected treasures. I came in with a gentle roar, and together we picked paint colors, styled shelves till our fingers bled, and selected just the right finishing elements (think rugs, lighting, and wallpaper) to pull this curio cabinet of a home into its best era. She brought the magic; I simply made it make sense.
What was involved in this project?
For this project, I really acted as an idea and product sorter. My client had incredible pieces to work with; she just needed help placing them in the right spots (it was a new home to them) and pulling her eclectic style and big ideas into something cohesive. We did that with wallpaper, paint, layout, and a healthy dose of pizazz. She came to the table with ideas, and I either gave the green light or offered a more elevated alternative, with the goal of nudging her toward a more sophisticated direction. We worked on the whole home: kitchen, living room, dining room, office, three bedrooms, powder room, and basement.
What's something you were really excited about creating for this project?
I was really excited to get some wallpaper up. We couldn’t easily capture the Jaws paper by Hygge & West but that really encompasses her personality. When I showed it to her, she latched on to it.
What was your biggest learning from this project?
I learned that clients can be true collaborators. We worked so well together.
Is there a tool, tip, or business resource from Hot Young Designers Club that you use in your business?
I love that HYDC reminds me that even though this is a business it’s important to have fun!
